What to wear for your family photography session

Mom’s outfit comes first

Mom, you are the biggest star of my sessions, and you deserve it! Pick your outfit first. Something comfortable and flattering. Then plan everybody else’s. Do it a few days beforehand. Two years ago, I scheduled a photography session for my family and procrastinated on the decision of what to wear. I had an idea in my mind, being a photographer, I thought I had it under control and didn’t need to worry. When I finally decided to try out my outfit, it didn’t look good on me (or at least I didn’t like it that day). To make things worse, the outfit I chose for one of my daughters was in her hamper. I ended up feeling very stressed and was almost late for my session. And even though we ended up looking good in our dresses, it was a cold day and we were freezing by the end of the session. Learn from my mistakes and plan ahead!

Choosing colors for your outfits during your family photography session

Choose 3 or 4 colors to wear and play with them. You don't need to be all matching but it's nice when all your clothes are a mix of the colors you chose. If you choose red beware that the person wearing the most red is going to be the one drawing the most attention in the photo. White, black, and grey make for a very clean look! Blue, yellow, and grey are also a fun combination, but any color works.

What to avoid wearing for a family session

Wear solids fabrics. You want your pictures to look classic for years to come. Contrasting tops and pants also work well, meaning that if you wear a light top, choose dark pants, and your husband should wear the opposite. The biggest things to avoid are big prints, logos, and black scarves.

Dressing for the weather

For colder days, layer your clothes to keep you warm and to look good in the photos. Jackets, sweaters, scarves (not black), hats, and boots are great for pictures, but gloves don’t work as well. When in doubt, Pinterest is a great place to get some ideas.

Hair and make-up

I want you to be you in your photos. If you never wear make-up, don’t start now!. If you like wearing makeup, you should plan some extra time for it. I know it is hard to find time to get your make-up done when you have little kids, but it is worth the trouble.
